List your top 5 favorite looking Thorn Guitars 2008 |
Lead | |
|
Well, it's mid 2008, and it has been close to 2 years since the last similiar post, let's see your favorites, have they changed, or are they mostly the
same? You can do a seperate list for Jr. 90's, or not.

My 2008 top 5:
150 - best quilt ever, and the most unique colors, never thought anything could
top a good blue quilt, but this does
138 - My favorite one piece Koa
3 - Saw it in person and it blew my mind, way more detail than in the pictures, so
it makes the list this year, Parrot inlays have to be seen in person
Honourable mentions: 6 105 73 130 148 tied with 95 (Birds of Paradise and 71 stayed the same from my previous list, the other 3 are new. On my honourable mentions list, 73, 130, 95 and 148 are all new. I guess that proves that Ron keeps getting better which is no easy feat considering what he has already done!) Jr. 90 List: Curly Koa #7 Koi #1 Slimline #2 Rosewood #8 Hotrod #5

I love most of the guitars that come out of the Thorn shop so this was a hard list for me to make, but I managed to narrow it down.

I'll play. I could easily stick with my 2006 list:
#70 - Shreve's Dubonnet Man birdseye and Brazilian masterpiece with the koa fretboard that looks like the head on a pint of Guinness.I didn't vote for my own guitars on principle. That said, #105 is a great guitar, and the SC-X prototype and Slimline #6 are great too. If you wanna vote for any of them, they'd be flattered. My favorite guitars that I've checked out since the 2006 voting: #67 - I thought the leafy twig soundhole was neat in the pictures, but what really floored me about this guitar is its tone. One of the best sounding guitars I've ever played. I will be getting some Wolfetones to go with the rosewood neck in my next Thorn. #148 - Big Mike's instant classic rock star guitar. #130 - beautiful in every way. Touching story behind the back plate inlay. Great color, pickups, the whole deal. Plus, I'm a sucker for a semi-hollow with f-holes. #145 - the Oreo Cookie koa. Really beautiful. Honorable mentions for Carl's Eagle guitar, Wayne's #100, and e's big hunk o' koa. Great looking instruments all. I haven't gotten a chance to play e's, but Carl's and Wayne's play every bit as good as they look. |

Since all of Rons guitars are lookers IMO, I'll just list the one that has captured my imagination the most.
SFC #1 - That guitar is something else. Spectacular! |

It seems I didn't contribute on the first thread a couple years ago. I'll give this one a shot.
I just scrolled through the gallery, what a wonderful walk through memory lane. There are way too many incredible looking guitars in there to limit it to just 5. Here are a few that tickle my fancy: #70 - Shreve's Birdseye, BRW and Koa...so classy. #52 - The koa sapwood traveleing over the bookmatched P-90 covers. The wood P-90 covers are really seeing a lot of action on other builder's products these days, but I have yet to see ones that out-do these. #91 - Pimp Daddy Purple!!! #138 - More Koa yumminess and one of my favorite inlays. #3 - Parrots and Koa - Classic. I could have easily made this list 25+ long. I'm such a softy. |

Artisans:
#34 #52 #62 #82 #91 Jr's: "Real Flame" 07 0206? I forget which one it was originally. 07 0608 Jr. Jr. Hot Rod 5 Hot Rod 8 Curly Koa 9 Hon Mentions: 39, 66, 68, 78, 89, 128, (the only Thorn I've touched, thanks, Sean! You've got a nice one there!), 150, 229, and Curly Koa's 7&8 I guess my tastes run a little different than eneryone else's. Koa is a beautiful wood, no doubt. But I only really like the "different" ones. Same with blue quilt. Looks like gentle water. It's just been done to death. Seems like I picked out a lot of red and purple. The root beer burst and olive tiger stripe stand out for me, too. Go figure. 82 is probably my favorite overall. thick quilted mahogany. red firesuns. black purfling. And the "real flame" is my favorite Jr 90 Just a cool as hell paint job. -Alex |

"Sorry, but for me that can not be done. Their all too good in their own way. Be like me trying to pick my 5 favorite women."
I thought about this for awhile last night, but have to agree with Ted. Different flavors that I totally like. I totally dug Shad's single pickup JR90. Leon's Orca. -e's #138 (or any other in the stable). Oscar's. But, I guess Wayne's original guitar would be my favorite, because that's what got me started.

Ya know, I'd have to admit partiality but I'd have to say that #11 and the 4 Jr90's under my roof are my 5 favorites...........but if I could
pick out of all of them that have been made thus far, it'd take me so long to make my mind up that Ron would have kicked out another gaggle of guitars by
then! I'd have to say 'em all! But for now, the ones I own will do.
Great thread, interesting to see what turns everyone's crank. |

I'm going to try and list just 5. I really don't know if it is possible. And since I have a special bond with my own Thorns I will not include them.
And what is interesting is that typically products of this type of craftsmanship show either an improvement as the builder perfects their skills, or
degradation as they become blase and just making money. The early ones and late ones all show an amazing consistency in workmanship.
Navaho - This is the reason I ordered my first guitar from Ron and the subsequent ownership of what I have. So no problem listing that one. Birds of Paradise are awesome although not fair since it is 3. #27 White Queen - love it. Always one of my favorites. Just the perfect rocker guitar. #03 - Great inlays and BRAZ baby. #52 - what a bit of wood and workmanship. What's not to like? #67 - Just seems right. And somehow my taste for KOA is being outed. #88 - Total understated KOA goodness AND P90s #95 - WOOD. Holy snikees. Lady G for ME. Artisan Hollow #5 - I covet this guitar. Well, I'll just stop now. There are more and it's like Lays. Bet ya can't like just 5 |

Alright, so this thread needs more PICS, here's a quick lesson on how to post 'em
1) Find the pic you want to post in the thorn gallery 2) Open the pic itself in a new window 3) Copy the address out of your internet browser 4) Paste it into this format in your comment: (img src="address you copied out of your browser") (br)Any Comment You want to make on the guitar(br)(br) but substitute a "<" for a "(" and a ">" for a ")" If I didn't use parenthesis, it would try to make my example into an image. |

Ron hasn't made a guitar yet that I wouldn't be proud to own. Each one that comes out highlights some part of the magic that comes with the coolest new
gear. I can't pick out five and say "These are my favorites" as it changes virtually everytime that I open a thread here announcing a new guitar
or check out the gallery. Having said all that, my favorite is 091 but it is a very biased opinion as it's mine. I would love to have a twin to
"E's" relic, and anyone that has heard Big Mike's PG Thorn immediately has thoughts of finding a way to pry it out of his hands.
Bottom line, so many of you have came up with incredible theme's or have picked woods and colors that just seem to belong together. Ron then finds a way to make dream's a reality. Here's a beer to all of you!
